Balance - The Overlooked Skill that Determines Independence
Balance rarely gets attention until it fails — but falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults 65 and older, and the age-adjusted fall death rate rose 21% between 2018 and 2024 (CDC, 2026). It's not a niche fitness metric; it's arguably the most consequential of the six assessments in terms of immediate, life-altering risk.
Balance touches nearly every daily movement: standing up from a chair, walking on uneven ground, reaching for something on a shelf. It quietly underlies almost everything else on this list.

How It's Measured
Balance is typically assessed using instrumented platforms that measure postural sway and stability during both static (standing) and dynamic (moving) tasks — giving an objective score rather than a subjective "how steady do you feel" check.

Why Measuring It Matters
Balance is trainable at any age, but the earlier a decline is caught, the more runway there is to address it before it results in a fall. A formal baseline turns "I feel a little less steady lately" into an actual number you can track and improve.
